I came from out of town and saw this place and thought it looked nice. Couldn't have been more wrong. I was charged for the most expensive beers in the bar without being given the opportunity to ask for anything else and I along with two friends played pool. It cost us $32 for 2 hours worth of pool. They neglected to tell us it was 6/per person per hour. Very much not worth it. The decor is tacky and the crowd was really bad. The music was insanely too loud for the amount of people that were in there and the DJ SUCKED! In short, do no go to Mahalo Cove if you avoid it!! The only upside to the entire bar was Emily, our waitress, was awesome!
Mahalo's food is always delicious and served fast. Not your typical bar food selections, although they do have some options in that arena. Lots of space to spread out your party of one or 100. Nice wraparound deck area for lounging in the fresh air. Seasoned bar staff and managers who learn what you like and anticipate your needs. Shared love of music. Great place for big events and fundraisers. Decent sized stage. Always tasty beers on tap plus cider. I choose Mahalo over any lame chain restaurants in Sterling anytime after 3 pm! My favorite place to bring friends or just to get some work done with a cold one.
RACIST, SEXIST, violent, and belligerent. I asked a bouncer to watch my drink while I used the bathroom, given I am a female and worried about my drink being tampered with. Instead of a polite "no", I was given distasteful jokes about 'roofies' and rape, as well as racial slurs thrown at me. The owner stood there and watched, and laughed with them. When I tried to complain to the manager about what had happened, he tried to defend his bouncers by saying "they were just kidding" and walked away from me mid-sentence. I had a male friend step in by trying to calm me down when speaking to the manager, and in turn the bouncers threatened to "take him out back and kick his teeth in/break his jaw". Unless you are a fan of blatant rape jokes and racism, and those who try to peacefully diffuse the situation being physically threatened, this is NOT the place for anyone.
We took advantage of the Living Social deal and sampled a lot of food. All of which was excellent - the Monte Christo is better than Bennigan's was, onion straws were perfectly done and the chicken quaesadilla was perfect with some of the best salsa I've had in a long time (flavor filled but not spicy). The food came out hot and exactly as ordered. The menu is limited because it's a bar and the food selection reflects this. The lava cake was incredible! The space has older decor and the chairs aren't the most comfortable (and the bathrooms are quite dated). Go go for the food, bar, pool or darts just not for a comfortable place to sit and hang out.
Ehh. Not very Hawaiian as the name would suggest, but food and service is ok. Nice beer selection.
